Bar Exam In My State

The Tennessee Bar Exam is designed to test an applicant’s ability to understand and apply various legal principals presented in different formats. The exam consists of one day of multiple choice (Multistate Bar Examination) and one day of essay testing.

The Multistate Bar Examination, or MBE, is divided into two sessions, morning and afternoon. Each session of the MBE consists of 100 multiple choice questions over three hours for a grand total of 200 questions over six hours. For more information on the MBE, including a list of subjects tested, please click here.

Tennessee Bar Exam info

  • If your MBE scaled score is 125-129, you must pass 9 essays.
  • If your MBE scaled score is 130-134, you must pass 8 essays.
  • If your MBE scaled score is 135 or higher, you must pass 7 essays.
  • Tennessee will accept an MBE score from another jurisdiction for a concurrent exam only.
  • You can expect to get the results of your Tennessee Bar Exam in October if you took it in July, and April, if you took it in February.
